J. Rockcliff Realtors Help Construct Habitat for Humanity Home
DANVILLE, Calif. — May 1, 2010 — Agents in J. Rockcliff Realtors’ Danville office don’t just help people buy and sell homes – they also help build them. Terri Tucker, Michelle Hensley, Melissa Almgren and Leslie Vilfort all participated in Habitat for Humanity’s recent Earth Day celebration by helping construct a house in Oakland’s Kinsell Commons.
They hammered nails, checked measurements, climbed ladders and moved walls as part of an effort to create a mixed-income community offering entry-level homeownership opportunities for low-income families. The 22 townhome development is part of a larger project at Tassafaronga Village being developed by the Oakland Housing Authority. Habitat for Humanity was given over an acre of land by the Authority for the Kinsell Commons project.
"We’re very proud of the hard work our team put into this important project that provides new opportunities for people to own their own homes" said Harry Murray, vice president of J. Rockcliff Realtors and manager of the company’s Danville office. "They weren’t just helping build a house – they were helping build a community," he added.
"After a day of hard work, it was so amazing to step back and see the progress we had made, and to know that this place will soon be a thriving village of friends, neighbors and families," said agent Terri Tucker. Fourteen of the homes will be completed by the end of this year, and the remaining eight by the end of next year.
The modestly sized homes will have amenities including landscaped areas, play areas and allotment gardens. The project is divided into two sites near 84th and 81st Avenues, and each site will have common parking areas, as well as pedestrian and vehicle links to the neighborhood.
The Earth Day event was part of a four-day build-a-thon sponsored by Habitat for Humanity to celebrate ÒgreenÓ building. One of Habitat’s goals for Kinsell Commons is to obtain at least a silver certification from the LEED for HOMES program, indicating that the project utilized sustainable building techniques. These include making sure the buildings are 15-35% more energy efficient than required by code, extra building insulation, dual-paned windows, efficient wood framing, recycling of 80% of construction waste, composite wood materials, etc. Another sustainable feature is the site’s walking distance to schools, public transportation, parks and services.
